Elite Revision Rhinoplasty in San Antonio

Revision rhinoplasty, or revision “nose job”, refers to the surgical changes to a nose that has already undergone surgery in the past. Revision rhinoplasty is much more complex, difficult, and less predictable compared to a primary rhinoplasty (having a nose reshaping for the first time).

Complications are frequently caused by too much or too little cartilage removal or failure of a surgeon to be knowledgeable of nasal breathing function. Many rhinoplasty surgeons ignore nasal breathing function for sake of improving appearance. In some cases, postoperative nasal breathing problems may be more distressing than the original cosmetic problem for which they had undergone surgery in the first place. Poor results and postoperative deformities are often due to the normal healing process, but may be caused by the lack of skill, knowledge, or experience of the rhinoplasty surgeon performing the initial operation.

Who is a Candidate for Revision Rhinoplasty?

Healthy men and women who have already had a primary rhinoplasty and are unhappy with the postoperative appearance, or who are experiencing difficulty breathing through the nose may be excellent candidates for revision rhinoplasty. During a consultation, an experienced Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon like Dr. Kenneth Yu will work with you to help determine the best course of action that will deliver the most appealing results.

What is the Recovery like from Revision Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Kenneth Yu uses only the most advanced revision rhinoplasty techniques. As each nose is unique in both appearance and function, the procedure and technique are tailored to each patient’s individual aesthetic and functional needs. Revision rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia because of the increased level of complexity and time required.

Revision rhinoplasty generally requires an open technique, using a small incision under the tip of the nose. This allows enough access to the cartilage and bone responsible for the shape and function of the nose. These structures are carefully adjusted to achieve the desired appearance and function. If too much cartilage has been previously removed or damaged, it may be necessary to use cartilage from the ear or elsewhere in order to reconstruct the nose. As each nose is unique in both appearance and function, the revision rhinoplasty procedure and technique are tailored to each patient’s individual aesthetic and functional needs. Sutures are used to close the incisions and a small external splint is placed. Internal splinting is usually required during revision rhinoplasty.

Revision rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis. Most patients return home a few hours after surgery. Length of recovery time depends on the complexity of the procedure and varies from patient to patient. Prescription pain medication is usually only required for the first few days. Mild discomfort, bruising, or swelling lasts 7 to 10 days. Most patients are able to return to work, school, or other daily activities within about one week. Avoidance of contact sports is recommended for at least two months after surgery. Dr. Kenneth Yu reduces bruising and recovery time with the use of homeopathic and herbal options. Detailed postoperative and aftercare instructions will be provided to each patient.

Those patients considering revision rhinoplasty, or revision nose reshaping, should carefully evaluate their surgeon’s credentials and training. Dr. Kenneth Yu is one of the select few fellowship trained Facial Plastic and Reconstructive rhinoplasty surgeons in the San Antonio, Texas area. Dr. Yu is also a Board certified Head and Neck Surgeon, with extensive knowledge to deliver the best cosmetic results while safeguarding proper breathing function.
