Why More Men Are Having Cosmetic Procedures
More men are choosing cosmetic procedures today than ever before — and it’s not about vanity.
It’s about confidence, competitiveness, and wanting the outside to match how you feel on the inside.
Let’s talk about why this shift is happening, and what men are choosing.
For a long time, cosmetic surgery was seen as something only women talked about openly. But that idea is changing. Men today are more visible than ever.
They are on video calls, in leadership roles, etc. And in competitive industries, appearance can influence how confident someone feels walking into a room. Though we are seeing more men choose plastic surgery, overall- far fewer men openly announce they have these done. In my practice, many men choose not to give permission to show their results.
For many men, cosmetic procedures are simply another form of self-care — no different than fitness, grooming, or health optimization.
What Men Usually Want (and What They Don’t)
The goals male patients have are very different from what you see on social media.
Most men do not want to look “done.”
They don’t want sharp angles or dramatic changes.
They want to look rested, strong, and natural.
Common goals I hear are: “I look tired all the time.” “My neck makes me look older than I feel.” “My eyelids look heavy.” “I want to stay competitive at work.”
The focus for men is subtle improvement — not transformation.
Here are some of the procedures men commonly ask about:
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
This surgery is meant to address their concern of heaviness and improves a tired appearance — often without changing how someone looks to others.
Neck contouring or neck lift
A well-defined jawline and neck can make a big difference in how youthful and confident someone appears.
Rhinoplasty
Usually focused on straightening, balance, or breathing — not refinement for appearance alone.
Non-surgical options
Men also benefit from Botulinum toxin (i.e. Botox, Dysport, etc.). In my practice, men tend to focus more on the forehead and frown lines. Men don’t like the deep horizontal forehead wrinkles and frown lines make them look angry. Boto is an effective and safe way to soften these lines. Unlike women, I find that men typically don’t want to get their crow’s feet treated with Botox because I think most men and women like the men to have a slightly weathered Clint Eastwood wrinkles around the eyes. Some men also seek fillers but tend to want more subtle results. They seek conservative support to their structure.
Why the Approach for Men Is Different
Men generally have:
thicker skin, stronger bone structure, different aging patterns and different aesthetic goals. That means techniques need to be tailored — especially to preserve masculine features and avoid over-softening.
The best male cosmetic results are the ones no one notices — except the patient.
My approach with male patients is always conservative and honest.
If surgery makes sense, we discuss it.
If a non-surgical option is better, we go that route.
And if doing nothing is the right choice, I’ll say that too.
The goal is confidence — not attention.
